Maps in print or online publications illustrate location-specific or spatial data.

Maps:

  • are useful for data visualisation
  • show geographical information, scale, location, distance, area, projection, symbolisation, topography, land use, population data and density, movement, navigation, planning, distributions, ownership, relationships, forecasts, warnings, and compilations
  • have a wide range of visual forms that are suited to different types of data relationships
  • make visual connections easy
  • show very detailed information
  • can be difficult to produce – you may need expert help
  • can distort shapes and sizes of forms and objects, so user testing may be necessary.

Remember to consider image accessibility guidance when using and creating maps.
